Periyar National Park is one of the most famous national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in South India. Adorned with a beautiful lake, the National Park covers over 925 square kilometers area. In 1982, Periyar National Park and the wildlife sanctuary were set up to reserve tigers and elephants. Now, it has become an abode to some of the endangered and rarest flora and fauna.

 

Surrounded by the picturesque Western Ghats, Periyar National Park is widely recognized for the scenic beauty. The hilly terrain, flat grassland, and the presence of exotic species of wildlife attract tourists from far and wide. The scenic beauty, rich biodiversity, and peaceful ambiance are the remarkable feature of this national park which mesmerizes the visitors.

 

Biodiversity in Periyar National Park – The forest is a peaceful haven for plenty of flora and fauna. The wild lives include elephant, tiger, wild pigs, Sambar, Indian wild dog, Gaur and the four most significant species ( the Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Common Langur, Gee’s Golden Langur, and the rare Lion-tailed Macaque) are found here. Also, 22 rare species of fishes, 112 species of beautiful butterflies, over 246 species of endangered birds, 28 species of reptiles reside in this national park. To explore the hidden beauty of this forest, many visitors show their interest in Jungle safari and boat safari.

 

Best time to visit- October to June is the best period to enjoy and experience the wilderness of the forest.
